The Atelier is about to hit the age of 20 and looking back at the series shows many tweaks and updates to the overall gameplay and visuals. With the upcoming release of Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings, we wanted to take a look at the Mysterious trilogy and show the leaps in world map changes that Gust has implemented with each release.

Begining in 2016 with Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book, the Mysterious series’ started off with a simple world map which was represented by a path to various areas. These areas were small and often only included one to two other sections, making them all seem rather small.

However, Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey seemed to change all of them with its own world map. Firis and her party were about to explore the lands and discover many dungeons and towns along the way. This change showed the biggest change in world map design that the series has seen to date and gave the feeling that this was a true adventure.

Now in 2018, Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings dials it back with a return to areas appearing in a list. However, these areas a much larger than what was seen in Atelier Sophie and are also full of things to discover.
