Today Conan Exiles developer Funcom announced a brand new game titled Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden.
The game is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2018, and is defined a “tactical adventure.” It’s in development at Bearded Ladies, a team made of Hitman veterans and including Executive Producer Ulf Andersson, known for the Payday series.
The setting is post-apocalyptic, and we get a brief summary of the background directly from the press release.
“Of course the world ends – it was always just a question of time. Extreme climate change, global economic crisis, a lethal pandemic, and increasing tension between old and new superpowers have turned our world into a chaotic wasteland. For the first time since 1945, nuclear weapons have been used in armed conflict. Mushroom clouds rose from east to west before the dust settled. The humans are gone. The Mutants are here.”
A comment from Andersson himself explains what the developer means with “Tactical Adventure Game,” and what we can expect in terms of gameplay.
“It’s an unusual label for a game, but tactical adventure really fits the bill, no duck pun intended. Our goal is to blend the deep and tactical combat of ‘XCOM’ with branching storylines that unfold as you explore overgrown forests and abandoned cities with your team of Mutants. Mixing that with real-time stealth gameplay gives you a unique way to approach or avoid combat situations you encounter while exploring.”
The game is developed in Unreal Engine 4 and features an interesting cast of unlikely heroes, such a crossbow-wielding, walking, talking duck Dux (pun not intended) and Bormin, a boar with serious anger issues. Their ultimate goal is surviving and finding the legendary Eden.
The announcement came with a cinematic trailer, which you can enjoy below.
