Today, Nippon Ichi Software released the first screenshots and artwork of its upcoming game Usotsuki Hime to Moumoku Ouji, which translates as Liar Princess and the Blind Prince.

The game was announced in January, and is scheduled for a release on May 31st, 2018 for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PS Vita.

The game tells the story of a wolf monster living in a forest. Despite its terrible appearance, it has a beautiful singing voice. One day the monster was singing at the moon, and it found out that the prince of a nearby realm came to hear its song. It seemed that he could not see the wolf.

Normally, the monster would have captured the boy and eaten him, but it did not on a whim. Afterwards, the boy kept coming to listen to the monster’s singing every night. No words were exchanged, but after a while, the wolf lost the will to eat the prince.

One night, after the end of the song, there was no applause. The wolf panicked as it saw that the prince was climbing the rocks to come see who was singing. Knowing that the boy would never come again if he saw its monstrous looks, the wolf clumsily reached out to cover his eyes. Unfortunately, the wolf’s sharp claws were not suited for a gentle touch, and it ended up slashing the face of the prince, who fainted due to the pain.

Soldiers came to rescue the prince and attacked the wolf with arrows, but the monster escaped in the depth of the forest. After a while, the monsters learned that the prince was blinded due to his wound, and his relatives locked him up in a tower to hide his scarred face. It sneaked into the tower and found the boy dressed in rags, with his eyes covered by a bandage.

Finally, they spoke, and the wold lied, telling the prince that it was a princess from a nearby kingdom and that the witch of the forest could heal him. In the depths of the forest, a terrible witch indeed lived, and she did grant wishes to those who paid the price.

However, the wolf knew that it could not touch the boy because it would hurt him again. It promised to come back to pick him up, and went to the witch to ask to be turned into a “princess.”

The basic gameplay lets the player alternate between the form of the wolf and that of a princess. As a monster, the player has strong limbs and sharp claws, able to climb to high places and to tear down obstacles, on top of defeating the other monsters dwelling in the forest.

In the form of the princess, the player can pass through narrow gaps, collect flowers, and work together with the prince to solve puzzles. The prince can’t walk long distances alone, so it’s also required to be in princess form to walk with him hand-in-hand.

The game has a stage-skipping feature that lets you enjoy the story without having to solve the puzzles. On the other hand, stages can be replayed any number of times to collect items that are necessary to open up side quests. Puzzles can also be enjoyed as many times as you want.
