No Yakuza Announcements at PlayStation Experience, but 2018 Will be a “Great Year” for the Series

During a livestream hosted yesterday by Sega, Localization Producer Sam Mullen and Scott Strichart talked about PlayStation Experience and next year.

Speaking about PlayStation Experience, they mentioned that Sega will be there, and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life will be playable on the show floor, but the format of the show has been changed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. For that reason, they confirmed that there won’t be Yakuza announcements at the show. That being said, they also teased that 2018 is going to be a “great year for Yakuza” and for Sega fans in general.

Mullen also hinted about a “super-secret project” that’s being worked on, and Strichart confirmed that he is currently still working on the Yakuza series. They even name-dropped Yakuza Ishin, commenting on all the requests they get about it on social media, but that was probably a joke, so you should probably not get your hopes up.

Mullen and Strichart also explained that due to the pace of the announcements at previous PlayStation Experience shows, there has been a period in which there were three Yakuza games announced for the west but not yet released (Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza 6), which was problematic for the sales and marketing staff, as it takes time to prepare every release, and every game should get its time in the limelight. That’s why, for the moment, the focus for Sega is on Yakuza 6.

Earlier in the stream they also had a conversation encouraging fans that will import Yakuza Kiwami 2 next week not to spoil it, as spoilers might turn off people from purchasing the western version of games.

Previous PlayStation Experience keynotes have always been occasions to celebrate for fans of the Yakuza series, as Yakuza 5 was announced at the 2014 show, followed by Yakuza Zero in 2015 and both Yakuza Kiwami and 6 in 2016.

That being said, Yakuza 6 is still coming on March 20th, 2018,  bringing the story of Kazuma Kiryu to a close. Yakuza Kiwami 2 will release in Japan on December 7th, and the Yakuza-meets-Fist of the North Stare game Hokuto Ga Gotoku will hit the Japanese shelves on February 22nd, 2018.
